At the close of 1860, the Müller family could feel the tension brewing around them, but they never imagined what lay ahead. None of them could have foreseen that in less than a year, their contented family would be ripped apart, their once-peaceful city roused to rebellion...

Timothy Müller’s days are spent in his father’s cabinet shop, where the steady work of hand and heart offers a sense of order the world outside no longer keeps. But as Virginia divides—neighbors quarreling, congregations parting, brothers drawn to opposing convictions—Timothy feels the world he knows being torn apart along with his family.
While others choose sides with fervor, Timothy pleads for peace in a land determined to rend itself in two. He prays earnestly for unity, for mercy, for the violence to cease. Yet the more he prays, the more the conflict spreads, and he cannot help but wonder why Heaven remains silent.
As the Müller household strains beneath the weight of discord, Timothy must confront the his deepest questions: How does one trust God when prayers appear unanswered? How does a man of peace stand firm when anger rules the day? How can he share his faith with others when that faith wavers? And can a gentle voice still carry weight in a time when so many refuse to listen?

Set in nineteenth-century Fredericksburg, Virginia, this work of historical fiction portrays the War Between the States from a perspective of faith, and also gives a glimpse into the seldom-mentioned chapter of the Civil War: the civilian experience.
